for baritone saxophone and contrabass

difficult. no time signatures. extreme ranges, extended techniques for both instruments.

This piece began its performance life as "i let the dogs out;" the only connection to the Baha Men single being the title. I wrote an email to a friend in which the subject was "who let the dogs out," simply because I felt like putting a silly subject and I had just heard the song for the first time (out of too many). The friend replied in sum, "i let the dogs out." I found it amusing enough to make it the title of this piece, which is rather raucous and doggish. Eventually, I concluded that the silly title had to go. It carried too many negative connotations because everyone knew and was annoyed by the Baha Men song. Around the time I came to this conclusion, I worked with someone who used the word "snit" a lot, but luckily wasn't in snits very often herself. Webster's defines snit as "an irritated or agitated state."
