As a music education major back at UMass Amherst, I was required to take "tech" courses -- basic techniques on an array of instruments, for the purpose of being able to run an elementary band program, which I did end up doing for a short time. Our teacher for percussion "tech" was Dr. Peter Tanner, who is also an accomplished composer. He required us to write a piece for junior high level players. I really enjoyed the assignment and I suspect that this put the notion in my head that I might aspire to be a composer myself.
