for elementary school band.
This piece is written so that it will sound full with just flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, and percussion.
Commissioned by the Massapequa Park Elementary School Band, directed by Jessica Wyman.
Ms. Wyman is an old friend from college who lives down the LIRR from me. She asked me to write a piece for her students. Thinking back on my own experience as an elementary school band director, I remembered how much my students had liked the clapping parts in 'elementary cool' and mouthpiece-only parts of 'messy/neat.' I knew I had to include some sort of soundmaking that didn't involve their instruments. People like to shout and so 'hey!' was born.
